JWC,

I hear that Live Search relevance has gotten a lot better, but I only try it as a backup. Although I think the image search ui rocks.

MSN Search is not that bad, there are some really neat sub parmeters that one can add to the search... i think in simple web searches it sucks, but no in the verticals.

Joe - Oh I hear ya'. Google's got great consumer products and -- like everyone else -- I live by their search engine. But a tech/business journalist could be a bit tougher on them given their enormous influence in online commerce. Though I understand that journos rely on access to do their work. Still.

I agree with your implication that Google is getting a free pass (as is Apple, in some ways), where Microsoft isn't, partly because they are adored.

But their good PR is only one side of that coin -- their end-users are happy too.

Granted, a good search engine is trivial compared to an operating system, productivity suite, server and db software, etc. (then again, look at MSN search -- yuck), but people love Google and are more willing to overlook ethical malfeasance as a result.

In the meantime, people were cursing Microsoft left-and-right by the time they were dragged into court, and there simply wasn't a lot of goodwill to offset it.

Meanwhile, Google is beloved and any legislator who goes head-to-head with them is going against the current, rather than riding it.
