John, alas, he seems determined to avoid the race (and the treadmill). Can't say I blame him.

And McCain's stature may be moot at this point -- the Republicans seem just as determined to avoid choosing their most qualified candidate.

It's looking more like Hillary every day...

McCain may be a former soldier. But he's not tall. His height is around 5'5". I've met him.

He's a little on the portly side. Certainly not obese.

Have any of you ever stood next to Al Gore? I have (Senatorial speaking engagement, c. 1984, at the American Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge TN), and he is NOT as tall as 6'1" -- I'd say 5'10", since he was visibly shorter than me (6'0", 230 pounds). I would agree that his working on slimming down would be a [welcome] sign that he would run again.

Chamberlin,

Now don't hate on Dan Quayle. Any guy who said, "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it" clearly has a subtlety of mind rare in this day and age. You think I'm conservative? Harumph! The very thought... And as for being intellectually lazy?

...that works.

Don't you think it is a little pathetic that conservatives have to resort to childish bulls!#% about the man's weight when trying to downplay Al Gore's achievements?

Here's the difference between former Republican Vice Presidents/Presidents and Democratic Vice Presidents/Presidents: Republican ex-Presidents attend ceremonies (usually because something is getting named after them) and summer in Kennebunkport. Democratic ex-presidents become renowned diplomats (Carter), found huge humanitarian efforts (Clinton Global Initiative) and mount global campaigns to help inform and solve possibly one of the most dire environmental problems the human race has ever seen (Gore). Oh... and he also won some prizes.

What has Dan Quayle done since leaving office? What can you imagine Cheney doing in 2009 that doesn't involved either making money or furthering the Republican Party?

Obviously, Republicans don't like that former Democratic (Vice) Presidents get so much positive attention. This is why they only thing that they can attack him with is the fact that he's overweight. The best thing I can say about that is that it is intellectually lazy.
