Peter,

This country was invented by an educated, landed elite and things turned out pretty well. As for me, I'm first-generation American, born into a poor family of Irish immigrants, and I busted my ass to get into an Ivy League college precisely because it was elite and would allow me to make a jump in class that would've been unimaginable to my parents. So don't expect to find any sympathy here for faux-populist anti-elitism.

As I said in the post, elite institutions -- in this case news operations -- are at least accountable, unlike many of the fly-by-night operations that are now undermining them.

Whether or not you count yourself among the elite, but you are still advocating an elitist agenda.

It is fascinating that you raise the subject of war, given that wars are invariably started by the elites in society, but they are rarely the ones to suffer on the front lines.

Perhaps if Germany and Japan had well informed populations and a little less subservience to the elites in their societies, WWII might have been avoided completely.

No, not me. I'm neither a professional journalist nor an editor. And as for arrogance, the presumption by the new media moguls that their "social media" schemes are superior to institutions that have developed over a century or more seems far worse than anything I'm saying.

<blockquote>
The problem, of course, is that people may not realize — until too late — that what they want isn’t necessarily what they need.
</blockquote>
...and you and people like you should get to decide what they need - right? What incredible arrogance.
